Whales
Preschool/Kindergarten level

In this unit study we learned that whales are mammals, which means they are warm-blooded, and need to breath air to live.  We learned the difference between "flippers" and "fins".  We measured, using a measuring tape outside, the lengths of different whales and compared that to the car, the house, etc.

The following four subjects are generally the same for each topic of study.  The remaining subjects, which change with each unit study are listed below.  I have also repeated any subjects that have an added idea for this particular topic of study.

Reading: Read articles and borrow books from the library on the topic of study.  We also read stories daily/nightly, and we read the Bible.
Phonics:

Right now, I mainly use file folder games using phonics flash cards as the skill cards in the game, and I also make skill cards for review of what we've learned.

Writing: Practice writing vocabulary words and upper and lower case alphabet.  I use a dotted font to make the words/letters on a lined paper and the kids trace them and then write them.
Music and
Geography:
Using the Animaniacs song, "America" we learn about the states and capitals.  We try to learn 1 or 2 lines of the song each week.

I have also made a States & Capitals Memory Game to drill the states we have learned.

Vocabulary/
Spelling:
Whale, Mammal, Ocean, Flipper, Fin

Math: For Math, we measured the lengths of different kinds of whales in comparison to the house, car, etc.
Science: Learn the characteristics of a mammal.  Discuss why whales need to breath air to live and how they nurse their young and are warm blooded.

Discuss the difference between salt and fresh water and the fish that live there.

Social Studies: Discuss whale hunting and how it has affected the whale population.
Geography: Whales live in the ocean.  Find the four oceans on a world map and learn the names.
Music:

Listen to Whale Songs from the internet.

Craft: We bought poster board and die-cut whale shapes, along with fish/ocean stickers.  The kids colored the whales shapes and glued them on the poster board.  They then added the stickers and coloring to complete their ocean scene.
Field Trip:

(1)  We went to a local aquarium store to see the differences between salt and fresh water fish.  We came home with a pet goldfish that week!  "Goldie"  LOL.

(2)  We went to Cape May, NJ and went on a Whale-Watch boat trip.  We only saw dolphins, but that was fine since they are warm-blooded mammals who need to breath air to live, just like whales.

Family Video

A race to save the humpback whales and in turn, save earth.
