Our Solar System
Preschool/Kindergarten level

We learned the meaning of "universe" and what makes a star, planet, and comet.  We learned about gravity and studied the nine planets, in order by their distance from the sun.  We also had a discussion about whether Neptune had rings around it.  One puzzle we did showed no rings, while another puzzle showed the rings were there.  So we learned about research and how to find out which picture was correct (and you don't think I'm going to just give away the answer, do you?  LOL)

The following four subjects are generally the same for each topic of study.  The remaining subjects, which change with each unit study are listed below.  I have also repeated any subjects that have an added idea for this particular topic of study.

Reading: Read articles and borrow books from the library on the topic of study.  We also read stories daily/nightly, and we read the Bible.
Phonics:

Right now, I mainly use file folder games using phonics flash cards as the skill cards in the game, and I also make skill cards for review of what we've learned.

Writing: Practice writing vocabulary words and upper and lower case alphabet.  I use a dotted font to make the words/letters on a lined paper and the kids trace them and then write them.
Music and
Geography:
Using the Animaniacs song, "America" we learn about the states and capitals.  We try to learn 1 or 2 lines of the song each week.

I have also made a States & Capitals Memory Game to drill the states we have learned.

Vocabulary/
Spelling:

Space, Galaxy, Universe, Planets, Stars

Math: We found some simple constellations in the sky and counted the stars in each one.  Also discuss the difference in your weight on other planets.
Science: Discuss stars, planets and galaxies and the part gravity plays in forming the galaxies.
Geography:

Find the nine planets in order from the sun.  (We used our son's place mat for this one!)  Discuss how the constellations look different from different places around the Earth.

History: Read about the creation of the universe in the Bible.
Also, read article about the invention of the telescope, and books about early astronomers.
Music:

The Animaniacs song "the Planets", about the nine planets in our solar system

Craft:

You can purchase a "mobile kit" to make, and create a chart on poster board of the nine planets, in order of the distance from the sun.

Field Trip: We went to a local college planetarium/observatory to look at the night sky.
Family Video
Night:
A Documentary.
