In this unit study, which is definitely one of our favorites, we made our own model of the lungs and learned the function of the diaphragm. |
|
The following four subjects are generally the same for each topic of study. The remaining subjects, which change with each unit study are listed below. I have also repeated any subjects that have an added idea for this particular topic of study.
|
|
| Reading: | Read articles and borrow books from the library on the topic of study. We also read stories daily/nightly, and we read the Bible. |
| Phonics: | Right now, I mainly use file folder games using phonics flash cards as the skill cards in the game, and I also make skill cards for review of what we've learned. |
| Writing: | Practice writing vocabulary words and upper and lower case alphabet. I use a dotted font to make the words/letters on a lined paper and the kids trace them and then write them. |
| Music
and Geography: |
Using
the Animaniacs
song, "America"
we learn about the
states and capitals. We try to learn 1 or 2 lines of the song each week.
I have also made a States & Capitals Memory Game to drill the states we have learned. |

| Vocabulary/ Spelling: |
Lungs, Diaphragm, Inhale, Exhale, Breathing |
| Math: | Count the number of breaths in one minute. Count breaths for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4. |
| Science: | Learn the mechanics of a diaphragm. Discover how breathing is an involuntary action. Discuss how air pressure affects breathing. |
| Social Studies: | Find out how pollution and smoking affects the lungs. |
| Geography: | Discuss why it is harder to breath at higher elevations, and why you cannot breath in space. |
| Craft: | Make a "Do-It-Yourself Lung Model" using a 1-liter plastic bottle, some clay, clear tubing, 3-way connector and balloons. |
| Field Trip: |
We went to the Radiology Lab at our local hospital. The kids saw a CAT scanner (and got to "ride" in it too) and an MRI machine. They also were shown xrays and CAT scans of the lungs and diaphragm. |
