Colonial America

Preschool/Kindergarten level

In this unit study we learned about the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, and some of the more prominent figures, such George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson.  We also discussed the original thirteen colonies and the time span during which they joined the Union.

The following four subjects are generally the same for each topic of study.  The remaining subjects, which change with each unit study are listed below.  I have also repeated any subjects that have an added idea for this particular topic of study.

Reading: Read articles and borrow books from the library on the topic of study.  We also read stories daily/nightly, and we read the Bible.
Phonics:

Right now, I mainly use file folder games using phonics flash cards as the skill cards in the game, and I also make skill cards for review of what we've learned.

Writing: Practice writing vocabulary words and upper and lower case alphabet.  I use a dotted font to make the words/letters on a lined paper and the kids trace them and then write them.
Music and
Geography:
Using the Animaniacs song, "America" we learn about the states and capitals.  We try to learn 1 or 2 lines of the song each week.

I have also made a States & Capitals Memory Game to drill the states we have learned.

Vocabulary/
Spelling:

Washington, Franklin, Colonies, Declaration, Independence

Math: We counted the stripes, and the stars on the flag.  We also discussed the dates which each of the thirteen colonies joined the union, and the time difference between them.
Social Studies: Discuss the lifestyle of the colonial period.  Maybe make a "colonial dinner" or make period costumes.
Geography: Find the original thirteen colonies on a United States map and label them.  Also learn the capital cities for each.
History: Read articles about three of the major figures of the time; George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson.
Craft:

Make your own colonial flag out of construction paper, with a circle of thirteen stars.  If you're "really" creative, make it out of material.

Field Trip:

We have a few historical villages we visited (such as Cold Springs Village, Cape May, New Jersey) which have people dressed in period costumes, hand-making colonial supplies and gifts.

Family Video: Documentary (from the A&E channel) on the American Revolution.  3 parts.
