Domestic Cats
Preschool/Kindergarten level

The following four subjects are generally the same for each topic of study.  The remaining subjects, which change with each unit study are listed below.  I have also repeated any subjects that have an added idea for this particular topic of study.

Reading: Read articles and borrow books from the library on the topic of study.  We also read stories daily/nightly, and we read the Bible.
Phonics:

Right now, I mainly use file folder games using phonics flash cards as the skill cards in the game, and I also make skill cards for review of what we've learned.

Writing: Practice writing vocabulary words and upper and lower case alphabet.  I use a dotted font to make the words/letters on a lined paper and the kids trace them and then write them.
Music and
Geography:
Using the Animaniacs song, "America" we learn about the states and capitals.  We try to learn 1 or 2 lines of the song each week along with whatever subject we are working on.

I have also made a States & Capitals Memory Game to drill the states we have learned.

Vocabulary/
Spelling:

Feline, Egypt, Meow, Purr, Whiskers

Math: Cats have 9 lives (or so they say!  lol)  So we worked with the number 9.  I had the kids look through those sale papers for the local supermarkets and find as many "9"s as they could.  We also worked on the 9 addition tables.  Ex:  9+0=9, 9+1=10, 9+2=11, etc.
Science: Talk about the 2 different main types of cats - long haired and short haired and the many variations within these groups.  Also how cats use their tails for balance and to always land on their feet.

Discuss the function of the pupil of a cat's eye - a vertical pupil (which could also lead into our unit study of the human eye)

Social Studies: Learn about the culture of ancient Egypt and how they worshipped cats as gods, as well as keeping them as household pets.
Geography: Locate Egypt on the map.  Does ancient Egypt differ from the Egypt we know today?
History: Discuss the first record of cats from ancient Egypt, approx. 5,000 years ago.
Music: Soundtrack to the Broadway Show, "Cats"
Craft:

Painting little ceramic cats, or cut cat shapes out of balsa wood to paint.  You can also buy die-cuts of cats and create a scene on poster board.

Field Trip:

Visit a local veterinarian to learn about cats.
